As Colorado’s winter settles in to stay for the season, many campers will start packing away their gear. But for some avid campers, this is their favorite time of year—trading in the holiday madness for a life of adventure on the road and solitude with nature.
Here at Colorado Trailers Inc., we’ve had the pleasure of touring our great state once or twice, and we know a few things about the best winter camping around. And while freezing temperatures may not be appealing to all, we know the unfound beauty you can tap into when you’re willing to brave Colorado’s winter.
5 of the Best Winter Campgrounds in Colorado
Dakota Ridge RV Park
Find yourself mesmerized by the Rockies, and dazzled by the Denver skyline when you decide to venture out to the Dakota Ridge RV Park. If you are pulling a multi-use trailer with space to stay inside, this is one of the best campgrounds for you. Featuring 141 full-service RV sites and ample amenities to complement your stay, you may find you never want to leave this place.
South Fork Campground
South Fork Campground is another great place for Colorado campers with or without a trailer. With its popular equestrian trail and scenic views, South Fork can be a hard place to book during the warmer months, however, the winter season is usually less busy—you should take advantage of the low rates and enchanting views while you still can.
Echo Park Campground
Situated at the base of towering cliffs along the banks of the Green River, the Echo Park Campground provides a star-gazing, camping experience like no other in Dinosaur National Monument. Pack your snowshoes or cross country skis for an experience like no other, and don’t forget to check the road conditions before you make the trek.
Zapata Falls Campground
One of the only year-round campgrounds at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, Zapata Falls Campground offers a unique experience, even in the colder months. While more primitive than some of the other campgrounds mentioned above, you can still expect stunning views of the sand dunes and an easy hike to the frozen Zapata Falls.
South Rim Campground
If you’re looking to visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, there are three all-year campgrounds you can choose from, depending on their availability. While the lack of tree cover will make for a windy stay, you can’t beat the incredible views from the canyon. Be sure to pack your snowshoes for a day of incredible hiking, and check out their website for up-to-date information on closures.
